Christmas 2007
Dear Family & Friends:
We have had an eventful year. Because David had accepted the presidency of Germanna Community College late in 2006, we spent the first three months looking for a house in Virginia, packing, selling our home in Florida, packing, packing, moving, unpacking, unpacking. You get the picture, I’m sure. We moved into our new home in Culpeper on
March 6 and very quickly had things unpacked to a point where we could live comfortably. That’s not to say, of course, we know where everything is. Missing things are sure to turn up just as soon as we buy new ones.
One week after moving, we had our first taste of winter…an ice storm. It didn’t last long, however, and we must say that Virginia winters are nothing like those in Michigan. But, they are nothing like those in Florida either.
We are first owners of our new home, so we had a blank canvass on which to add blinds (no more showers in the dark), paintings, and decor. The only drawback was our new home was built on a moonscape. We remedied that this summer when we had large trees, shrubs and flowers planted. It looks so much better and Linda is hoping we will attract mockingbirds and hummingbirds this spring. In the meantime, we thoroughly enjoyed the fall by taking drives to see the colors and hiking in the Shenandoah. The falls here are glorious, where in Pensacola things just turn brown.
We have some sad news…
We recently lost our cat, Watson; he was 17 years old. The vet believed that he had cancer, even though there was no visible tumor. Our gentle giant, who at one time was almost 18 pounds, weighed less than seven pounds near the end. It is so hard to lose a pet and we miss him. But we still have Watson’s brother Holmes and “stepsister” Sammi Jo, and even though they are getting older too, they are doing well.
But we also have wonderful news…
David’s job is going very well and he enjoys it. He is very busy and Linda attends many of the functions with him. We have hosted a couple of gatherings at our new home and will be doing more in the future. And David’s presidential inauguration (generally held after a year) has been scheduled for April 4 when Michelle & Kevin will be able to attend.
Michelle, Kevin and family continue to do well. They are both teaching 7th grade this year; it seems they have to change every year, but it is good news that they still have jobs. Kaitlyn is 4 years old going on 24 and Carter turned 2 in September. They are such joys and their antics a great source of amusement (for us if not their parents). We recently found out that we will have another grandchild in July, and are so looking forward to spoiling the third one.
After spending months trying to find his first career position, Ryan was offered two positions at the same time. He accepted the position of graphic designer in the advertising department at The Free Lance-Star newspaper in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He is thoroughly enjoying the work and the people there. He continues to do freelance work in web design and photo restoration and will soon have some of his photography displayed at the college. If you’re interested in seeing some of his work, his portfolio is on the web at: http://home.comcast.net/~rwmtch/
We promise to do a better job of keeping our blog up-to-date next year, including baby photos when the new prince or princess arrives.
